Washington, D.C. (June 28, 2024) - The Supreme Court on Friday issued a landmark ruling that sharply curtailed the power of federal agencies to regulate. In a 6-3 decision, the Court overruled the seminal 1984 Chevron decision, which gave agencies broad deference in interpreting ambiguous statutes.
The case before the Court, West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency, challenged the EPA's interpretation of the Clean Air Act. The EPA had argued that the statute gave it authority to regulate greenhouse gases from power plants. The Supreme Court disagreed, finding that the statute was ambiguous and that the EPA's interpretation was not a reasonable interpretation of the law.
